Welcoming Scarborough Health Network as Our Newest Pharmacy Member
Mohawk Medbuy Corporation (MMC) extends a warm welcome to our newest Member, Scarborough Health Network (SHN). SHN joins the growing number of organizations from across health care and other public sectors that are benefitting from the value, innovation and insight offered by MMC’s not-for-profit, shared services model.
“We’re excited to onboard Scarborough Health Network to MMC’s Retail Pharmacy Program,” said Ally Dhalla, MMC’s Vice President, Pharmacy Services and Innovation. “This program helps SHN lower their pharmacy costs, streamline operations and ensure the viability of this vital patient service.” By combining the collective purchasing power of many hospital-owned retail pharmacies, MMC’s Retail Pharmacy contracts drive savings, maximize spend quality and help support a stable supply of essential drugs.
Ontario’s third-largest community health network, SHN has 900 beds across its three hospitals – Birchmount, Centenary and General – along with several community-based satellite sites. SHN serves one of Canada’s most diverse and quickly growing communities by providing care for over 850,000 people in the eastern part of the Greater Toronto Area and beyond.
SHN’s retail pharmacy at their General Hospital enables timely access to oral chemotherapy drugs not readily available at most community pharmacies and is staffed by pharmacy professionals who specialize in cancer care. Pharmacy staff play an essential role in the patient’s circle of care – they directly connect with SHN physicians, provide individualized medication counselling and offer follow-up calls for additional patient support. An on-site drug access facilitator assists patients in obtaining insurance and/or accessing other funding programs to help cover medication costs.
Mohawk Medbuy’s value-added solutions help ensure this SHN retail pharmacy can continue to provide this high level of support and enhance the patient experience. “We’re pleased to be embarking on this strategic partnership with MMC,” said Swasti Bhajan Mathur, Pharmacy Director, Scarborough Health Network.
“SHN serves a large oncology patient population, and our oncology retail pharmacy provides them with timely access to specialized care, as well as crucial, safe medication support,” adds Swasti. “This initiative allows added built-in safety checks for our patients, since they are receiving care from SHN pharmacists who have access to patient information not easily available elsewhere. Savings realized from MMC’s Retail Pharmacy Program help us protect the financial viability of this important touchpoint in the patient care journey.”
