MitigAID: Reducing Patient Risk During High-Impact Supply Disruptions

Manufacturer supply disruptions are an unfortunate daily reality in hospitals. As Canada’s health care supply chain becomes increasingly complex, product discontinuations, backorders and recalls become more common. These shortages can profoundly impact the delivery of care by delaying diagnostic tests, necessitating the cancellation of surgeries and leaving lifesaving medications in short supply.

That’s why Mohawk Medbuy (MMC) created MitigAID – our supply disruption management program. By providing a single source of up-to-date information and comprehensive support, MMC helps hospitals navigate supply disruptions in ways that minimize risk to patients and reduce the workload of hospital clinicians.

“Mohawk Medbuy has really seen what our pain points are at the hospital level,” said Suzy Araujo, Director of Corporate Services, St. Mary’s General Hospital. “MitigAID is the light at the end of the tunnel – taking supply disruptions from reactive to more proactive. It’s a huge value-add for us.”

Harnessing the Power of Data

In the event of an actual or pending product supply disruption, vendors are required to log into MMC’s online Portal and submit a notification indicating what products are impacted, the start date of the disruption, estimated end date, suggested substitutes and other relevant information.

By harnessing our comprehensive hospital spend data, MMC can immediately determine the scale and scope of a disruption and how much of the affected product each site uses. This information then appears in the Member hospitals’ MitigAID Disruption Dashboard – providing a single source of truth and 24/7 visibility on the status of the disruptions impacting their sites and potential substitute items.

“MitigAID provides tremendous insight into what’s happening across the supply chain to help us manage our response,” said John Aldis, Senior Vice President, Finance and Corporate Services at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. “It’s a collaborative, streamlined process from start to finish. MitigAID has been a very helpful resource for us – we use it every day.”

“Ensuring hospitals have immediate access to alternative items is a top priority of MitigAID,” said Liette Rough, MMC’s Director, Clinical Services & Quality Assurance. Mohawk Medbuy’s database draws on years of RFP and other information to feed a vast Like Product Repository of over 579,000 items. “Our Clinical Team of registered nurses and pharmacists uses this data to identify and assess potential substitutes, which reduces the workload of hospital clinicians,” she added.

MMC’s Clinical Team engages in ongoing collaboration with vendors, government regulators and fellow clinicians at our Member hospitals to seek out, assess and secure alternative items. Learn more by exploring our supply disruption stories below.
